PIRINOA

DAIRY COMPANY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) ' The annual general meeting of shareholders of the Pirinoa Co-operative Dairy Company was held on Thursday, but owing to the indisposition of the chairman (Mr D. S. Warren) only formal business was transacted. LOWER VALLEY DAIRY COMPANY. The sixteenth annual meeting of shareholders of the Lower Valley Cooperative Dairy Company was held in the company’s premises on Monday. The report and balance sheet were presented and disclosed that the company’s property was practically clear of liability and that the paid-up capital amounted to about £5OOO. The chairman in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet commented on the increase in the manufacturing cost of approximately Jd per lb. of butterfat which was now considerably higher than the Government allowance of 3.25 d per lb. Considerable difficulty had been experienced in regard to the restriction of hours of the company’s employees and this had had a big effect on the quality of the cheese manufactured. He also commented on the large increase in farming costs and the great difficulty the suppliers have had in procuring satisfactory labour on the farms.-Dairy farming was becoming more difficult and if these conditions prevailed for any length of time then undoubtedly dairy production must decline in the Dominion. Already, the production of butter had declined by 10,000 tons during the past year and cheese by about 3000 tons. This represented on today’s market price a decline of £1,540,000 in value. The chairman also expressed the hope that there would be an easing of some of the restrictions in regard to the dairying industry and that labour conditions would improve. In his opinion there should be an increase in the guaranteed price for next year to bring the remuneration of the dairy farmer in line with that received by other sections of the community. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Messrs Campbell Smith and J. Jameson, the retiring directors, were reelected. The following compose the directorate: Messrs A. Linton, R. Clark, J. Jameson, Campbell Smith, D. S. Sutherland and C. Hodder. At a subsequent meeting of the directors, Mr A. Linton was unanimously re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. PERSONAL. Mr J. P. McMaster, who has been visiting the South Island, has returned home. SCHOOL VACATION. The local school 1 closed for the vacation yesterday. INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. Several children in this district are laid aside with influenza. The epidemic has been very rife among both old and young. LARGE WILD PIG KILLED. Messrs H. Smith and R. Muir, . two local residents, when out pig hunting at Palliser Bay recently, were fortunate in killing a boar which was stated to have been one of the largest secured in that locality for a considerable time. The animal had huge tusks and its hind legs were deformed, due no doubt to a former encounter with hunters.
