OPIUM SMOKING
CHINESE FINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Fines totalling £240 were imposed on eight Chinese in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, for offences concerned with smoking opium. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., was on the bench. George Wong, gardener, aged 60, was charged with allowing the premises he occupied at 21 Haining Street to be allowed for smoking opium on August 18. Those who were charged with being on the premises were: A. H. Kong, gardener, aged 35; Ah Sing, gardener, aged 29; Ah Wai, gardener, aged 40; Ah Sue, gardener, aged 54; Sue Joe, gardener, aged 34; Ah Joe, gardener, aged 30; Sum Jok, gardener, aged 75. The magistrate fined Wong £lOO, in default three months’ imprisonment. He was allowed one month in which to pay, a payment of £5O a fortnight to be made. Each defendant was fined £2O, in default 21 days’ imprisonment.
