COUNTY AFFAIRS
WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL. FOOTPATH AT CLAREVILLE. (“Times-Age” Special). The chairman, Mr D. McGregor, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, held at Carterton yesterday. The treasurer’s statement disclosed a credit balance of £434 12s 7d. Receipts since-last meeting totalled £1544 18s 4d and accounts amounting to £2792 18s were passed. The annual balance sheet was returned from the Audit Department with no tags attached. It was decided to make no charge for 18 yards of crusher dust obtained by the Carterton School Committee. Mr J. B. Jury was given permission to put pipes in across Ponatahi Road in connection with his drainage work. It was resolved to again ask for a Government subsidy of £3 for £1 instead of a £1 for £l, as granted, on the construction of the Tea Creek bridge at Clareville. In discussing prospective work, it was resolved to instal a culvert across Green’s Road at East Taratahi and to call tenders for the following work: — Mangahuia bridge on the Martinbor-ough-Masterton Main Highway; metalling of the Glenburn Road; widening of the Wanuioaru Valley road; levelling the Kokatau Flat road; improving the approaches to the Backwater bridge at Gladstone. After some discussion it was decided, in conjunction with the Main Highways Board, to regrade, reform and metal the footpath from the Taratahi Hotel to Clareville - One hundred trees are to be planted at the Admiral cottage and at the Landsend cottage.
