TARARUA TRAGEDY
BODY BROUGHT TO WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. After an extremely arduous journey, part of which was undertaken in heavy rain, a very strong wind, and bitter cold, the party of trampers and two policemen which left Wellington on Tuesday to recover the body of Mr Arthur Fredric, aged 22, Queen’s Drive, Lyall Bay, from the Alpha Hut in the Tararua Ranges, returned to Wellinglon at midday yesterday. Mr Fredric collapsed and died near the Alpha Hut on Sunday when on a weekend tramping expedition with five other members of the Victoria University College Tramping Club. The time taken by the party to travel from Pukuratahi, which is just past Kaitoke, to the Alpha Hut, seven hours, is considered by experienced trampers to be excellent, considering the very difficult conditions in which the trip was made. The return trip was also completed in fast time, the men taking 12 hours to make the journey, loaded as they were with the weight of the stretcher and the body.
