CARTERTON
MEETING OF R.S.A. COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special). The monthly meeting of the committee of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. was held on Tuesday. There „ were present Messrs A. T. Murray ' (chairman), C. A. Chennells, H. Rathbone, G. Rabbits, C. Manley, F. Taplin, L. T. Harding and the secretary (Mr D. G. Johnston). Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Messrs M. F. King and J. Boyd, who were members of the branch. A letter was read from the Wairarapa Aero Club inviting applications from ex-soldiers’ sons between the ages of 17 and 25 years, to be given free tuition in flying, subject to certain conditions. The letter was re- ■ ceived. Accounts amounting to £4 11s 3d were passed. It was decided to place on record on the minutes of the branch the valuable services rendered by the late Mr M. S. King, who had been a member of the committee for a number of years. His loss to the Returned Soldiers’ Association is a severe one. It was decided to hold the ladies’ night, previously postponed, on Tuesday, September 6. A flagpole donated to the branch by Mrs E. Quinn was gratefully accepted. The secretary was instructed to get in touch with the returned soldiers of Gladstone and Te Whiti, regarding the holding of a combined ball at Gladstone.
HOQKEY TEAM. Following is the Carterton hockey team to play the Feilding representatives at Feilding on Saturday:—Newbold, V. Sayers, M. Worsfold, R. Byers, D. Jackson, S. Fisher, A. Fisher, I. Fisher, A. Harp, D. Irwin, R. Crawley, W. Sewell. GIFT AFTERNOON. The home of Mrs C. Kemp Goodin, Garrison Street, Carterton, was the scene of a happy 1 gathering yesterday when a gift afternoon was held in honour of Miss Norma Williams, who is to be married shortly. The rooms wefe tastefully decorated with bowls of spring flowers, and bright fires made a pleasing setting. An amusing “beetle” game was first held and was won by Mesdames J.' L- Harris and N. R. Armstrong. A parcel competition was won by Miss Norma Williams after a keen contest. Several appreciated vocal items were contributed by Mesdames M. Worsfold (Carterton), Geo Corlet (Masterton) and Gold (Greytown), the accompaniments being gracefully played by Mrs R. Ede, of Feilding. Afternoon tea .was served, after which Mrs Kemp Goodin called upon Miss Williams to open and accept the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause and musical honours. Miss Williams responded, thanking Mrs Goodin for the enjoyable party arranged on her behalf and the guests for the beautiful gifts. The hostess, Mrs Kemp Goodin, wore a frock of moss green crepe patterned in white. Miss Norma Williams was dressed in a parma violet model frock and her mother, Mrs N. P. Williams, wore a smart navy frock. Among many others present were Mrs J. Currie, grandmother of the brideelect, and Mrs A. Prentice (Masterton) an aunt. ( PERSONAL. Miss E. Thornton, of Wellington, is visiting Carterton, and is the guest of her sister, Mrs N. R. Armstrong. Mr W. B. Allen, of Clareville, who has been in the Greytown Hospital for a little over a week, has returned to his home. Mr Allen will celebrate his 92nd birthday tomorrow, and on that day he has been invited by the Wellington Early Settlers’ Association to attend an At Home in his honour at Wellington. Mr Allen has signified his intention of being present. It had been intended to celebrate his birthday with a function at Clareville, but in view of the Wellington invitation the party at Clareville has been postponed. Mr Allen will return from Wellington on Friday evening in time to attend the usual social in the Bandroom which is given by him each birthday.
