The City’s better view of the international situation is reflected in more cheerful markets and a slackening of the gold rush. The sales of gold today were only £600,000 compared with over £1,000,000 yesterday. The foreign exchanges also are steadier. The Paris Bourse is firmer, but reports from Berlin continue to be adverse. Dealings there in some stocks were suspended, after falls of as much as nine points. German trade returns are unfavourable. They show an excess of imports for July of £200,000.

GOLD & EXCHANGES (Recd This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, August 17. The price of gold today is £7 2s 4Jd an ounce. Exchanges: New York, 4.88 3-8 dollars; Paris, 178 7-8 francs; Batavia, 8.92 florins.
