Billiards Championship.
The desirability of promoting an Australian and New Zealand amateur billiards championship in Wellington during the centennial celebrations was stressed at the annual meeting of the Wellington Billiards Association last night. It was decided to proceed with the necessary preliminaries, and to endeavour to secure nominations from R. Marshall, the British Empire champion, and E. Cleary, Victorian champion. Quarry Explosion.
What residents thought was an earthquake was felt in Oamaru on Tuesday afternoon, as the result of the firing of a shot in the harbour board’s quarry. The shot was a blow-out and did considerable damage. Rocks flying in all directions wrecked three sheds, one being reduced to matchwood. A building used as the quarry office was badly damaged, rocks some three feet in diameter crashing through the roof. More than 150,000 tons of stone and debris, it is estimated, was brought down by the shot, including much excellent stone for harbour works. Fortunately, no one was hurt by the flying rocks.
