DECLARATION BY SLOVAK MINISTER APPEALS TO COMPATRIOTS (Recd This Day, 12.10 p.m.) PRAGUE, August 16. Dr Derer, Minister for Justice, and leader of the Slovaks, in a speech at Bratislava, said: “Czechoslovakia cannot disappear like Austria. If an attempt is made against us we will show that we will not yield to force or allow our independence to be wrested away.” Dr Derer appealed to Slovaks to support the Patriotic Front. FATHER HLINKA DEAD. (Recd This Day, 11.50 a.m.) PRAGUE, August 16. The 1 death has occurred of Father Andreas Hlinka. He led the campaign for Slovak autonomy and was once imprisoned in Hungary for issuing Slovak propaganda. ACTIVITY IN AUSTRIA. MANY MILITARY TRAINS ON THE MOVE. (Recd This' Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, August 16. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Prague correspondent says great military activity is reported through Austria. From Innsbruck to Vienna, there is a constant transport of troops in military trains, consisting of tarpaulin-covered vans, many apparently containing guns.
