STOLEN CAR IN FLAMES

SPECTACLE NEAR THE SUMMIT OF MT. EDEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 16. Two hours after it had been stolen from Campbell Road, a five-seater sedan motor-car owned by Mr Andrew Carnie, Morningside, was discovered in flames on the road near the summit of Mt Eden at 1.30 this morning. The fire burned fiercely and extensive damage to the vehicle resulted. For Epsom residents who were abroad in the early hours of the morning, the blazing car, in its conspicuous position on the hillside, presented a brilliant spectacle of leaping flames. When the brigade from the Mt Eden station was summoned, the metal portions of the car were at white heat, but little difficulty was experienced in quelling the outbreak by the use of extinguishers and the 40-gallon reservoir on the engine. One wheel of the car was found to be over the edge of the bank, below which there is a drop of several hundred feet. The theft and subsequent destruction of the car, which was valued at £235, are being investigated by detectives.
