WOMEN GOLFERS
NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIA. ANNIVERSARY TROPHY GAMES. SYDNEY, Aug. 16. A number of New Zealand women golfers participated in the 18-hole stroke handicap for the special 150th anniversary trophy at the Australian Golf Club, today. The event afforded valuable practice for the open championship tomorrow, in which it is anticipated that the best of the New Zealanders will figure very , prominently. Today’s competition was won by Miss Hirst, Victoria, with a net 73. Miss Sydney Jones was runner-up with 74 (which is par for the course). Then followed the New Zealanders Miss J. Horwell, Miss H. Buchanan, and Miss P. Helean, with 76 each. Other New Zealander’s net scores were as follow: Mrs Fullerton-Smith, 78; Miss B. Rutherford, 79; Miss J. Hornabrook, 87; Miss Illston and Miss Nutt failed to return cards. Miss Helean’s 79 was the best gross score and equalled the course record. Miss • Horwell’s gross 80 was the next best. Mrs Fullerton-Smith and Miss Buchanan each had gross 82’s. A high wind made playing difficult. Miss Helean was remarkably steady, scoring 13 pars and being one over at each of the other five holes. But for a couple of duffed tee shots, her score would have been even better. Miss Horwell registered 12 pars, but lost strokes at the other holes due to faulty putting. Mrs Fullerton-Smith is hitting all her shots crisply, but visits to several bunkers. today were costly. She also had lapses on the greens. Miss Buchanan had a well-balanced card of 41 each way. Miss Rutherford and Miss Hornabrook whose gross scores were 88 and 94 respectively, were frequently off the line with their tee shots.
