CHINESE CLAIM
ADVANCING JAPANESE SHATTERED ON SOUTH BANK OF YANGTSE. DEFENDERS HOLDING STRONG POSITIONS. HANKOW, Aug. 16. The Chinese claim to have completely shattered the Japanese advance on the south bank of the Yangtse, east of Juichahg, where the Chinese are holding strong hill positions. ANOTHER RAID. EIGHTY KILLED AND MANY WOUNDED. (Recd This Day, 9.30 a.m.) HANKOW, August 16. Eighty persons were killed and 220 wounded in a raid by fifty-six Japanese planes on Hankow, Wuchang and Hanyang.
