BOROUGH WORK

REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. At' last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported as follows: — Streets: Maintenance work was carried out in Cockburn, Donald. Devon, Herbert, Short and Raglan streets and Lansdowne Crescent. Michael Street is being regraded at the Pownall Street end and the material excavated is being used to bank up the footpath past the Fish Hatchery in Pownall Street. Titoki Street is being cleaned up, trees cut, elms and stumps grubbed out and road widened and regraded at Mr J. W. Buchanan’s corner. Short Street path from Pownall Street west on the north side is being cleaned off up to the end of the widening. The reserve at the corner of Renall and College streets has been grubbed over, strip around the side trenched, plantation dug over and all the taller shrubs removed to the side boundary. Kuripuni Street paths and channels are being cleaned. The driving of the piles for the Colombo Road Bridge extension has been completed and excavation and boxing for the pile caps will be proceeded with immediately. The river was turned into the new channel below the Park on July 29, and the old channel was dried off on August 5. Building permits: During the month 10 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £11,176, the fees thereon amounting to £lB 10s. For the corresponding period last year 12 permits were issued having an estimated value of £3,591 5s 6d. BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr T. A. Russell) reported:—Notifiable infectious disease: Diphtheria, 3 cases (two further cases were reported but eventually proved negative); scarlet fever, 3 cases (one family); erysipelas, 1 case; puerperal Pyrexia, 1 case; total, 8 cases. To date this month the following additional’ notifications have been received:—Diphtheria, 3 cases; erysipelas, 2 cases; pulmonary tuberculosis, 1 case. Milk supply: Applications have been received for licenses for two newly built dairies and as the premises comply with the regulations I respectfully recommend that a license be granted in each case. Two dairy farms were visited. Traffic: Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £l7 14s lOd. Twenty-eight applicants for drivers' .licenses were examined, 6 failing to pass the test. Twenty-seven persons were prosecuted for breaches of the regulations, a conviction being secured in each case. Six further cases are pending.

GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr J. V. Douglas) reported as follows: —Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 5,068,000 cubic feet, being an increase of 148,000 cubic feet or 3 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 7 per cent. The Government Inspector visited the works on July 5. The claorific value of the gas was 475 B.T.U. and sulphuretted hydrogen was absent. General work: The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time. The changing of the water gas into the coal gas foul main has given very good results and I have not cleaned out a purifier since the beginning of May. The coal stocks at the beginning of the month were getting rather low and the men have been engaged in putting 500 tons of coal into stock and cleaning and renewing services.
