ROAD CYCLING
WAIRARAPA CLUB NOTES ON SATURDAY’S RACE (By “Three-Speed”) The members of the Wairarapa club journeyed to Carterton on Saturday to compete for a trophy donated by Mr G. Vincent. Conditions were good, and very fast times were recorded. K. Woollet (scratch) again secured first place and fastest time, beat R. Copp by l-ssec. The latter gained second place and second fastest time. Both these cyclists are riding very well indeed. M. Graham, off the 2-minute mark rode a splendid race. He started by himself and gained on the leaders. Eventually when the scratch men caught him he rode with them to gain third place. G. Swain did not last long owing to cramp. Perhaps a change of gearing of his cycle might be an improvement. B. Dooling pulled out as injuries he suffered on the previous Saturday began to trouble him. J. Brader, J. Duckett and L. Green withdrew as they found the pace much too fast for them. R. Green did very well on Saturday, but riding by himself so long told on him towards the finish. P. Mayes crashed on the third lap, but luckily did not sustain serious injuries. W. Gay rode well to finish fourth. R. Killington found the pace too much for him. C. Dykes was left behind, but finished the course. D. Wishart and B. Harman did not start on Saturday. The club would like to see these riders out again, and also E. Lefort. C. Gourlay, who is out of the district, was also a non-starter, as was J. McAliece, who has a poisoned arm.
