“THE CINGALEE”
ANOTHER FINE PERFORMANCE. LARGE AUDIENCE LAST NIGHT. A large and enthusiastic audience greeted members of the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society at their second performance of the colourful musical operetta, “The Cingalee” in the Opera House last night. Once again, principals, chorus, orchestra and ballet acquitted themselves admirably, and the performance went with a swing from start to finish. A feature of the production is the dressing, a factor which contributes largely to the brilliance of many of the ensemble scenes. The acting and singing, too, are capably handled, by the principals and supporting members of the company. Miss Bebe Francis again gave a delightful representation of the character of Nanoya (the Cingalee). Opposite her is Mr J. Warham, as Harry Vereker, the lover, who was another favourite with the audience. A full measure of comedy is provided by Mr Ray Foster, in the part of Chambuddy Ram. Others in the cast are Mrs F. Dingle and Miss Joan Evans, both gifted vocalists, Mr C. Rogers, as Boobhamba, a native nobleman, Mr J. Claridge and Mr A. McFarlane. A clever ballet contributes several numbers, and Miss Rona Edwards gave much pleasure as a solo dancer. The orchestra, under the baton of Mr R. J. Young, is excellent. “The Cingalee” will be repeated nightly at the Opera House until Saturday next. The performance starts at 8 p.m.
