STATION IMPROVEMENTS

PARKING AREA TO BE SEALED MAINTENANCE OF TREES Some time ago proposals emanating from the Railways Department were made for the improvement and beautification of the surroundings of the Masterton Railway Station. The matter was taken up by the Beautifying Society, in conjunction with the Borough Council, and a certain line of action decided upon. Referring to the Beautifying Society’s work, the secretary, Mr A. W. Reynolds, stated this morning that oveiseventy shrubs were planted last winter on Railways land near the station, but he regretted to say that as far as he knew the trees had not received any attention since they were planted. The area was now more or less a wilderness. It was understood when the proposals were discussed that the Department would prepare ’’the borders for planting, and that it would undertake the maintenance of the shrubs planted by the society. Nothing was done, said Mr Reynolds to prepare the ground, and the society had to do the work itself. The society, he pointed out,, was fully prepared to co-operate with the Department, though it did not receive much encouragement. According to the Borough Engineer,. Mr C. R. Mabson, the parking area for both taxis and private cars is to be tar-sealed this summer. This will make a much-needed improvement to the approach to the station. The Stationmaster, Mr A. Latimer, when asked about the position concerning the shrubs, said he had not received any instructions about the maintenance of the trees, though it was probably the duty of the surface-, men, and no doubt the matter would receive attention during the summer. At present the surfacemen were busy with track work which occupied all their time. The safety of the public was their first consideration.
