CARTERTON
PERSONAL ITEMS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. B. Kruse, who has been mana-ger-of the Co-operative Store, Carterton since its establishment, has severed his 'connection with the business, and has been appointed to the staff of Yates’ Stores, Masterton. Mr Alf Pauling, of the- gasworks staff, is at present on annual leave, and his place is being taken by Mr J. Dew. Mr H. A. Harris, of Timaru, who has been the guest of Mr L. H. Wrightman, has left on a visit to the Hawke’s Bay district. Mr and Mrs D. L. Taverner of Carterton spent the week end at Bulls. Mr Cyril Stilburn, of Masterton, who contracted severe influenza while staying at the Lake Ferry Hotel, is now progressing favourably. CARTER HOME The monthly meeting of Carter Home Committee, was held on Saturday, the Mayor (Mr D. L. Tavener), presided. There, were also present Coupcillors E. McKenzie, C. J. de Lacey, J. Udy and the secretary, Mr J? S. Laurenson. An apology for absence was received from Rev N. F. Stent. The report from the manager of the Home, stated that everything was proceeding satisfactorily, and that the inmates, with the exception of one who was in the Masterton hospital, were in good health. New hospital beds have been provided for the Home. A new wood arid coal shed had been completed. The contractors were Messrs Ashton and Grimmer. Accounts amounting to approximately £250 (including renovation work), were passed for payment. The visitors for the current month are Councillors J r Udy and 'C. J. De Lacey.
MINIATURE'RIFLE ASSOCIATION A meeting of the executive committee of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association was held in the Fire Brigade Hall, Carterton, on Saturday evening. There were present, Messrs W. Johnson (chairman), W..Press, P. A. Wilton, L. G. Rassmussen, D. J. Flynn, R. Amos, P. Russell, H. K. Smith, Geo Te- Whaiti, R. Tilson, R. Amos and C. J. De’ Lacey (secretary). The meeting was called for the purpose of discussing the tightening up of shooting conditions, and, if necessary, the' erection of a new range for the championship fixture next year. After considerable discussion, it was resolved as arccommendation to the annual meeting, that the allocation of prize money be widened, and that the secretary communicate with various associations throughout • New Zealand with a view to formulating a new method. > It was also resolved that the method of scrutineering be changed, and that it be recommended that in future the tester shall cover the white line of target for registration of a “bull.” Inter-club shoots will also be governed in like manner.
It was resolved that the return match (20-aside) against Wellington should take place on the South Featherston range on Saturday, August 27, and that the return fixture be arranged with Bush for Wednesday, August 31, on Masterton range. If that date is unsuitable, Saturday, September 17, to be substituted. The catering for the fixtures was left with South Featherston and. Masterton clubs.
The-, president notified his intention of donating a small trophy to each of the winners of the pairs’ competition next year, and he was warmly thanked in connection therewith. DANCE AND EUCHRE . The weekly dance and euchre tournament under the auspices of the Carterton Labour Party Social Committee was held in the Band Hall on Saturday evening, and was well attended. The music was supplied by Mr D. Te Tau, C. Hewitson and Mr Vic Boyd. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr and Mrs Stan Green, Miss Joyce Benge and Mr D. Waters (Wanganui), Miss Madge Green and Mr K. Carroll. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr L. Uprichard. The prizes in the card tournament were won as follow: —Ladies, Mrs Brown, 1; Mrs Hooper, 2; men: Mr K. Hodder, 1; Mrs Grimstone, 2; Consolation, Mrs Collies. The efficient way in which the set down supper was arranged was due to the energetic committee of ladies. LAMBING SEASON Farmers in the South Wairarapa district have appreciated the recent warmer weather, as grass for stock is very scarce. Lambing is in full swing in many parts of the valley, and some farmers have docked a fair number of animals. MEMORIAL SERVICE Yesterday morning at the Methodist Church, Carterton, a memorial service to the late Mr Melville F. S. King was held, and was largely attended. A special parade of members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Manchester Unity Odd Fellows, and Returned Soldiers’ Association was held. Appropriate hymns were sung, and the choir also rendered an anthem. The Rev H. White preached, and made special reference to the sterling character of the deceased. Mr J. Freddy, who had been associated with the late Mr King in various capacities, also gave a brief address, as did Mr R. P. Wakelin, who had been closely associated ’ with deceased in the Fire-
Brigade in War Services, and in the Swimming Club. LADIES’ MEDAL GOLF. The following were the best cards handed in for the medal round played on Saturday:— Seniors.—Mrs Booth 94, 18, 76; Mrs Orr 96, 17, 79; Mrs Moon 97, 18, 79; Miss Berrill 101, 18, 82. Juniors.—Miss Armstrong 99, 30, 69; Miss Smart 101, 28, 73; Miss Lamb 104, 30, 74. The best cards for Mrs Candy’s Trophy were: —Miss Welch 152, Miss Armstrong 153, Mrs Murray 1’54, Mrs Orr 155, Miss Campbell 155. The following is the draw for Saturday next: —Mrs , Orr v Mrs Moon; Miss Berrill v Mrs B.
