KENT BOWLING PUNISHED AUSTRALIANS PILE UP RUNS. BRADMAN IN MERRY MOOD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, Aug. 13. The weather at Canterbury was cloudy for the match between Kent and Australia today. Bradman won the toss and elected to bat. Australia made an indifferent start, Fingleton and Brown being out for only 38. The visitors then began to pile on runs, and at stumps had scored 450 for eight wickets. Fingleton’s short stay was bright and he batted with great dash. Watt worried Brown, who was at the crease for 40 minutes for four runs. ’ Bradman was quickly into his stride and reached 50 in as many minutes. He was in the heartiest mood after his holiday. Badcock played a sterling innings, and reached 50 in 85 minutes. Barnes, at ten, was missed at square leg off Davies. He and Badcock hit hard and, despite reliable fielding, brought up two hundred in 160 minutes. Badcock was less sure of himself after lunch and the new ball was responsible for his dismissal. Barnes was restrained. He was again missed at 48. Barnett reached 50 in an hour and demonstrated the value of natural forward play. Walker and White punished the bowling severely. The bowlers were jaded when they left the field. Details: —

SELECTORS IN A DILEMMA. (Recd This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 14. The English team for the fifth Test will be chosen from the following:— W. R. Hammond (Gloucestershire), K. Fames (Essex), M. Leyland, H. Verity (Yorkshire), W. E. Bowes (Yorkshire, L. Hutton (Yorkshire), Paynter (Lancashire, L. E. G. Ames (Kent), Fagg, D. C. S. Compton (Middlesex), W. J. Edrich (Middlesex), T. W. Goddard (Glouctestershire), J. Hardstaft (Nottinghamshire) and D. V. P. Wright (Kent). The Australian Associated Press says the nomination of fourteen players instead of the thirteen for previous tests, indicates that the selectors are in a dilemma as to which batsman to drop. Barnett, since his brilliant, if lucky, century, in the first Test has achieved little. His omission is not surprising but the retention of Edrich, who also failed, shows that the present committee are firmer believers in youth than its predecessors. It is difficult to suggest the most probable eleven. The only certainties appear to be Hammond, Ames, Fames, Paynter, Leyland and Hutton, though Verity and Wright are almost sure to play, leaving two batsmen and one bowler to be chosen .from the remainder.
