Hedges and Trees.

Contracts are now being let by tender to nurserymen by the State housing Department to plant live hedges where fences are considered necessary or suitable, and also to plant trees along streets in the various housing subdivisions throughout the Dominion. This information was given by Mr J. A. Lee, Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing, who said the scheme was in conformity with the desire of the department to plan subdivisions on the most modern lines. The policy will be followed until all areas are catered for with shrubs and trees.

There was a large attendance of dancers from all over the district, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. Supper was provided by the committee. and the floor was in excellent order. Mr A. Barnes provided the music. The proceeds from the dance will go towards the expenses of the Wairarapa hockey team, which is to take part in the Dominion tournament at Gisborne. A similar function will be held at Te Ore Ore next Saturday night. Waikato Heads Afforestation.

Rapid progress has been made in the work of consolidating and reclaiming some 5000 acres of shifting sand dunes, whch, until a few years ago, seemed destined to overwhelm hundreds of

acres of rich dairying land at the north Waikato Heads. Since May, 1932, nearly 4000 acres has been consolidated by marram grass and lupin planting, and now, under the supervision of forestry experts, the whole area is being planted with trees. More than 100 employees of the Public Works Department are encamped at Otaua and Maioro. Two nurseries have been established for rearing seedling pine trees, and to date nearly 1,000,000 trees, over an area of some 750 acres, have been planted out.
