HARRIERS

MASTERTON CLUB. The Masterton Harriers held a friendly run over mixed country on Saturday afternoon. Leaving the Oval, the three packs under R. Shaw, C. K. Long,-and J. J. Hunter made down the back of the hospital on and along the new stop bank over Colombo Road and followed the river for part of the championship course. From there the track continued over Te Ore Ore Road near the bridge and along a rough and stony track parallel with the river. After following the Ruamahanga for a mile or so the trail cut back across country over swamps and creeks, until the end of Gordon Street was reached. From here, the packs, who were now beginning to clap on the pace, skirted the edge of the 'golf links and made down to and along French Street along Robert Road 'to Totara Street and home to the park, the first pack to arrive being the medium pack consisting of Long, Baikie, C. Pringle, I. Shaw and harriers who over the last two miles made the pace a cracker. Next Saturday will see the contest for the Wairarapa 5 mile District Championship to be held under the auspices of the Kiatere Club at Solway when leading runners of both clubs will compete for the individual honour.

KIATERE CLUB. TURNBULL CUP RACE. On Saturday twenty members and supporters of the Kiatere Harrier Club journeyed to Wellington to contest the final race of the Turnbull Cup, against the Olympic Club. The first race resulted in a win for Kiatere by four points, but Olympic on their home ground completely turned the tables by winning with a margin of thirtythree points. The course was about six miles, comprising two laps. About forty runners were started by Mr G. C. H. Trail, the Kiatere Club’s president, and from the outset E. Richardson (Olympic) took the lead front W. McDonald (Kiatere), L. Francis (Kiatere), A. McDonald (Kiatere), and D. Sunderland, (Olympic). By the time the golf links was reached, E. Richardson and D. Sunderland (Olympic) had a slight lead upon W. McDonald and W. Burgess (Kiatere) who now had crept up to. the leaders. At the end of the first lap Richardson and Sunderland were leading from Burgess who had a slight lead from Lovett (Olympic). With about two miles to go W. Burgess began to gain on the leaders and after filling second position for quite 1 a while was beaten by Fisher who was running very steadily.

The final results and times are as follow: —E. Richardson, O, 34min 35 sec, 1; Fisher, O, 34min 55 sec, 2; W. Burgess, K, 35 min 7sec, 3; Lovett, O, 36min 13sec 4; D. The sealed handicap for a medal presented by Mr D. Turnbull, run in conjunction with the race, was won by L. Francis with W. Burgess 2nd. The Olympic sealed handicap was won by McNaught. After the race afternoon tea was provided by the ladies committee of the Olympic Club. In the evening a dance was held.
