CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies SLIPPERY BACK AGAIN (By "The Cynic.’’)
Slippery is back on’ the Hastings tracks. What is the odds that he will carry silk again? Graham McCormick has disposed of his Gascony—Arbitration gelding, Trench Law, to a patron of Angus Dods’ Waipukurau stable. Lindrum has" fully recovered from his leg disability, but will not be put to anything serious until after the National meeting, where his stable companion, Gironde, is at present competing. . Good Looker. Red Shoes is developing into a fine looker, although she was always an attractive filly. Not bustled at all last season—she was not asked anything serious until the autumn when successful at Waipukurau —Peter Douglas, in this Pere—Rapide filly, should have something well worthwhile to take to the metropolitan meetings this season. Tullamore, which did not come up to expectations last season, has wintered well. Ofttimes thoroughbreds go off as three or four-year-olds, so maybe this half-sister to Ben Braggie will this season come into her own.
Ellerslie Two-year-olds. The heavy tracks .lately at Ellerslie have had the effect of hampering the preparation of two-year-olds, most trainers being reluctant to speed up their charges under these conditions. The majority of youngsters, however, have been getting through plenty of steady work and with the likelihood of better conditions soon prevailing, there is every prospect of local stables being well represented in the early juvenile events of the season. At present the most forward of them are the Night Raid —Royal Flavour filly La Vie, who has sprinted in fine style on several occasions; the Australian-bred colt Dark Legion (Dark Fox—Our Legion), who is making very rapid progress and looks the part of an early galloper; and the Vaals—Miss Melva filly White Mark, who has also made very pleasing headway in her preparation. An injury prevented Yours Truly from going -to the National meeting, at which fixture he appeared to have a good chance ’of winning a stake. He hurt a hock, and, though not seriously, Jack Lowe cancelled the trip. Myriam. Twelve months ago Myriam surprised when she won a race at the National, her backers including-.a couple very loyal to Trentham horses. This week the mare races again, this time in open class, which may be just a bit too hot for her at the moment. Gresham is to lose the number of his mess with Tom George. He has been a big disappointment and not an eighth as good as a couple of other Greshams we know. Arctic King is not to race until the new season is well under way. Winter scale of weights are against him. The 900 guineas Beau Pere-Domin-ant colt —that’s what Ralph Stewart had to give for him at the Sales —is to race as Beau Vite, and may start his career in the Debutante at Wanganui.
Colonel Payne Unsound. There is little prospect that the three-year-old colt Colonel Payne, who made the record price as a yearling of 15,000 guineas, will run this year, states an English exchange. Miss Dorothy Paget may soon have to consider the alternative of keeping him in training another year or sending him to the stud. On more than one occasion Colonel Payne has shown himself a really good colt at home, and it is unfortunate for his owner and trainer *hat knee trouble has kept him back. His only appearance was a year ago in the National Breeders’ Produce Stakes at Sandown, in which he indicated that he was a colt of genuine class by finishing third to Portmarnock and Tahir. This year Frank Butters had hoped to saddle him for the Granville Stakes at Ascot. A week before the race the colt had been favourably galloped with Mirza 11, and Neuvy, but soon af- 1 ter the gallop the old trouble in the knee reappeared, and it has been impossible to do much with him since. Colonel Payne is a colt of considerably more than average interest. When this son of Fairway and Golden Hair came up with Lord Furness’s lot at Doncaster, the opinion was expressed that he was one of the best-looking yearlings ever seen in the sale ring. He was knocked down to Norman Scobie, bidding on behalf of Miss Paget, for 15,000 guineas, the underbidder being Mrs Glorney, the American lady owner.
Stan Bagby has three two-year-olds under his charge, but he is not bustling them in their early movements, though they should all be showing up later in the season. High Caste, the half-brother to Stretto, is worth gazing at. He is by Bulandshar. The other paid are Konetta, a bay filly by Bulandshar from Sunny Hours (dam of Shining Hours), and Wapaugh, by Siegfried-Polonaise.
The youngster by Beau Pere-Voloxia at Ellerslie, is being well cared for, and thrilling her party as one likely to be useful when her turn comes later on.
Posture at Work. Posture, which displayed speed in the hack class last season, and then developed leg trouble, is back in light toil.
Gloucester is likely to be working under Wally McLean for future racing. McLean’s team is growing, and second in numbers to that of Stan Bagby at northern headquarters. Valmint and Armacourt are a pair in work which are scampering over sprint distances in time which is encouraging. We can state that Palmint seems on the improve since making a very respectable showing for a hack in open class at Matamata. King Rod Sound. King Rod is still standing up to his tasks, and it looks as if Johnnie Lambess’s jumper is going to give some cheek in steeplechases before the ground gets ’hard. Bill Fergus is doing his best to get the real strength of Lighter and Piracy, which possess useful pace.
