CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The president, Miss O. Wolters, presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Women’s Institute on Thursday, and there was a large attendance of members. . Before the commencement of the business reference was made to the recent death of the president of the Wai-rarapa-Bush Federation, Mrs Crewe. All members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The financial statement, which was considered very satisfactory, was adopted. It was decided to plant a native tree at the railway gates at an early date. Miss Wolters and Mrs Pink were appointed to represent the Institute at the Birthday Party of the Gladstone Branch to be held on Friday, August 19. Mrs Jolly, of Martinborough, gave a very interesting travel talk on a trip through Holland. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and was presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs W. Pinfold, who was the Institute’s delegate to the biennial conference recently held in Wellington, submitted her report. She was accorded a vote of thanks and was also the recipient of a shoulder spray. The competitions resulted as follows: Sausage rolls: Mrs Adams, 1; Mrs Steffert, 2. Jam tarts: Mrs Swan, 1; Mrs Steffert, 2. PERSONAL. Mr W. B. Allen, of Carterton, is undergoing treatment at the Greytown Hospital. SCHOOL RE-UNION. Ex-pupils of the Carterton School are expected from all parts of the district at the re-union dance to be held at the King’s Theatre on Monday evening. The function will provide an excellent opportunity for all to renew friendships made during school days. Every provision is to be made for the enjoyment of patrons, and all are invited to attend. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. Next week will be the last week of the second term at the local schools. The holiday period will be two weeks. CENTENARY FUND. A systematic canvass of the Carterton district is to be made of all Church of England homes. The object is to obtain finance for the new cathedral and the Bishop’s Fighting Fund.
