OUR PENSIONS BILL
OPPOSED VIEWS JN LONDON “DAILY MAIL” SCEPTICAL. LABOUR PAPER PROCLAIMS GREAT TRIUMPH. (Recd This Day, 1.10 p.m.) . LONDON, August 12. Commenting on the New Zealand pensions proposals, the “Daily Mail,” in an editorial, describes them as first instalments of Utopia. It adds that they will remain very pretty reading ■until New Zealanders face finding the cash. “This is precisely the sort of programme British Labourites are panting to introduce,” the paper adds, “but it is hopeless and impossible economics when all the money that can be raised in Britain is earmarked for rearmament.” The “Daily Herald,” in a leader, says: “There are still people who say Labour is unfit to govern,- but they always have a hard time when asked to explain away what is happening in New Zealand, where the Labour pensions Bill, after other reforms, is a great triumph and a lesson to the Empire of what Labour can do. Such news is worth spreading. New Zealand cannot continue indefinitely raising the standard of life without people in this and other countries wanting to copy her.”
