DAVIS CUP
AUSTRALIA V. JAPAN HONOURS EASY IN SINGLES. YAMAGISHI BEATS BROMWICH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.55 a.m.) MONTREAL, August 12. In Davis Cup singles matches Quist defeated Nakano, 6/3, 4/6, 9/7, 6/1. Yamagishi defeated Bromwich, 6/0, 3/6, 7/5, 6/4. Quist, in his first set against Nakano, played a back-court game at the outset, but achieved more success when, by forcing shots, he made openings and followed up to the net. After many errors in the second set, Quist seemed likely to lose the third as well, the Japanese having set point at 6/3. Quist then rallied magically, driving his opponent to the backlines and making ungettably-angled returns to take the set. Quist was clearly superior in the final set. Yamagishi, in the first set, handled Bromwich’s service and returns at will and repeatedly caught his opponent flat-footed. The second set was a surprising contrast, in which the Australian gave Yamagishi a tennis lesson, the latter striving hopelessly at times in an effort to • get the Australian’s drives. The third set was very even and the play was good. Both lost their services repeatedly until, after fiveall, Yamagishi clinched his own service, and then broke through Bromwich’s to take the set. In the fourth set. Yamagishi ran to a 4/2 lead, frequently passing Bromwich at the net or lobbing over his head. Bromwich evened the score in games, but the Japanese assumed a vital 5/4 lead, which he quickly translated into ' victory.
