DIRECT TRADE WITH HULL
A NEW ZEALAND CELEBRATION When the public in Hull recently noted that simultaneously ninety of the butchers’ shops of the city were making attractive window displays of New Zealand lamb, they realised that a concerted effort was being made to push the sales of the New Zealand product. The establishment of a monthly steamer service direct to Hull from the Dominion was considered by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board to be the opportune moment for one of its publicity campaigns in the area with its population of over 400,000. Methods which have been well tried in other campaigns were successfully repeated. Over 4000 entries were received for the children’s painting competition, and all the entrants were entertained to an exhibition of New Zealand films, it being necessary to utilise two of the largest cinemas in the city for this purpose. At an official luncheon which was tendered by the Lord Mayor of Hull to about 50 representatives of the business community, the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr W. J. Jordan) attended, and the prizes were distributed to the winners of the window dressing competition, and the popular feature of decorated butchers’ delivery cycles. Good results promptly followed in an improved demand for New Zealand lamb, and it is considered that there is ample scope in this populous area for further development of the trade.
