AMERICAN SPY HUNT
STARTLING DISCLOSURES EXPECTED INVESTIGATION OF PAYMENTS FOR PROPAGANDA CHECK-UP' ON ALIEN WORKERS • IN SHIPYARDS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. WASHINGTON, August 9. Announcing that more than 25 important persons had been subpoenaed to testify before the House Committee investigating “un-American activities,” the chairman, Mr Martin Dies, said today that startling disclosures were expected. The inquiry begins on Thursday. Mr G. S. Viereck, the author, is the only witness named. He is alleged to have served as a Nazi publicist. President Roosevelt has authorised the committee to examine the incomes of those arraigned from which it is anticipated that payments for propaganda will be revealed. The Navy Department has also begun a systematic check-up on all aliens employed in ship-building. Mr Dies said that the committee's investigators in major cities had uncovered a mass of startling information. “We intend to investigate the question of espionage in connection with military secrets, including the recent case in New York,” he stated.
