AIR TRAGEDY
FOUR AUSTRALIANS KILLED BOMBER STRIKES CLIFF IN DENSE FOG. DISASTER IN PORT PHILLIP BAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. MELBOURNE, August 10. Four members of the Australian Air Force were killed this morning when, during dense fog, an Avro Anson bomber crashed into the eastern cliff at Port Phillip Bay, near Dromana. Bodies were flung in all directions and the aeroplane was smashed to matchwood. The dead are Pilot-Officer R. Symonds, Sergeant-Pilot J. Gillespie, Aircraftman K. McKerrow and Aircraftman R. Mawson. The fifth occupant, Aircraftman J. Glover, escaped with cuts and severe shock. /( Residents heard the machine, apparently lost, seeking a landing. The crash was heard for a considerable distance. The machine struck the headland about 500 feet from the top of a dense forest of tall trees.
