HARBOUR MISHAP

TUG HOLED BY MOTOR-SHIP. LITTLE VESSEL SINKS ON WAY TO SHALLOWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Harbour Board tug, Te Awhina, when assisting to berth the Federal Linfe motor-ship Essex, at 7 o’clock this morning at the Central Wharf, was struck by Essex’s propeller, which tore a hole in the tug’s port side below the waterline. Water rushed in and Captain D. Probert headed the tug for shallow water west of Prince’s Wharf. The water gained rapidly, and when the tug was 200 yards from the viaduct wall and 50 yards from the Hobson Street wharf, she sank in 3J fathoms, with only the top of her bridge showing above water. The' tug’s crew was taken off by the launch Presto. Captain Probert remained on the vessel till she sank, when he jumped clear and was picked up by the launch Presto, which stood by the tug during the accident.
