MEN WHO TRIED TO SAVE TWO COMRADES. THREE RESCUERS OVERCOME IN PIT. (Recd This Day, 1.15 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. The story of fruitless heroism by workers is revealed at Wellingborough, where two men, while cleaning out a pit at a tannery, were overcome by gas. Another man climbed down to rescue them and collapsed. Two others who followed were also overcome. Another two descended with ropes attached and were pulled out in a state of collapse. A police sergeant arrived with a respirator and was lowered into the pit. He brought out five dead men.
