MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. STATE HOUSING PROPOSALS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, presided at the monthly meeting of the Martinborough Council, held last night. Others present were:. Councillors M. N. Hardie, W. F. Gundrie, P. R. Plummer, T. A. Hamilton, D. J. Green, W. H. Corfield, G. P. Cotter and C. R. Holmes. Councillor M. Mulvaney was granted leave of absence. “They are three very worthy causes,” observed Councillor Gundrie when it was decided to contribute £1 to the Ada Patterson Fund, and 10s each to the Spanish War Children Fund and the Chinese Children Refugee Children Fund. A firm of solicitors wrote stating that the trustees had not the power to sell the land required for a Fire Brigade site at a nominal price, although they could during the lifetime of Mrs Pain, and with her approval, lease the land at a nominal rental. The Town Clerk, Featherston Borough Council, advised that a meeting of delegates from the Featherston, Martinborough and Greytown Borough Councils and the Featherston and Wai' rarapa South County Councils would be held on August 18 to discuss the appointment of an executive committee to deal with the local centennial celebrations. The Mayor was appointed to attend the meeting. A letter was received from the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Committee, stating that the council’s allocation towards the cost of the Wellington Provincial Court was £36 16s. The Director of Housing Construction wrote stating that Cabinet approval had been obtained to acquire from the council sections fronting Strasbourge, Ohio, Otaraia and Broadway streets. It was intended to call tenders at an early date for the first housing contract in Martinborough. PERSONAL ITEMS Mr W. Martin is spending a holiday in Rotorua. Miss Mary Quinn, who has been on the staff of the W.F.C.A. in Martinborough for several months, has been transferred to the Greytown branch, where she commenced duties yesterday. The vacancy at Martinborough is ‘being filled by Miss Pearl Cotter. Mr Eric Chote left yesterday for Opotiki to which place he has been transferred. Several members of the Martinborough Fire Brigade journeyed to Featherston last evening to attend the annual Fire Brigade Ball which was a great success,, and thoroughly enjoyed. Mr George Brassell, Senr., is visiting Christchurch for the Grand National meeting. RADIO CLUB TALK. At the weekly meeting of the Radio Club held in the Club Rooms last evening/a talk on radio apparatus was given by Mr Sid. Bell, of Greytown.
