TOILSOME JOURNEY

ELEVEN MILES IN BLINDING SNOWSTORM. FOLLOWING ON DESTRUCTION OF MOUNTAIN RESORT. SYDNEY, Aug. 8. The latest advice regarding the fire which totally destroyed the chalet, the winter sports resort eleven miles up the mountain from the Hotel Kosciusko is that there were 85 guests and 25 members of the staff at the chalet. The fire is believed to have originated in the boiler-room. It was discovered by the manager, Mr George Day, who roused the guests and staff and urged them to get into warm clothing as, quickly as possible. He accommodated them for a time in an adjoining shed. Then began the trek back to the Hotel Kosciusko, 11 miles down the mountain in a blinding snowstorm. The journey occupied nine hours, and the majority arrived in a state of collapse.
