LONDON QUOTATIONS LAMB MARKET FIRM Lamb market: Remains firm with prices unchanged. Consumption continues satisfactory. Mutton market: Wethers again easier owing to increasing stocks. Ewes, quiet and unchanged. Beef market: Chilled beef, no change this week. N.Z. porker pigs: Market steady and unchanged. N.Z. baconer pigs: Slightly easier owing to lower bacon prices. The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield Market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses: New Zealand Sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 5 l-8d (53d); 491 b to 561 b, 4 7-8 d (sd); 571 b to 641 b, 4 5-8 (43d); 651 b to 721 b, 4£d (4£d). Messrs Levin and Co Ltd, have received the following cable from their London Agents dated August 4, 1938:— “Frozen meat quotations (prices on a ‘delivered’ basis, i.e., including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc): North Island down lambs, 28/361bs, 73d per lb, 36/421bs, 73d per lb; best North Island Xbd lambs, 28/361bs, 7gd per lbs, 36/421bs, 7|d per lb; North Island second quality lambs, av 30/31 lbs, 63d per lb; best North Island wether sheep, under 481bs, 53d per lb, 48/561bs, 43d per lb, 56/641bs, 4jjd per lb, 64/721bs, 4|d per lb; North Island ewes, under 481bs, 33d per lb, 48/561bs, 33d per lb, 56/641bs, 3|d per lb, 64/721bs 3d per lb. Compared with last week’s quotations, wethers up to 641bs -Jd per lb lower; others unchanged. There is no change in the lamb market. The demand for mutton is poorer. The market is weak for prime wethers.”
