YANGTSE FIGHTING
RESISTANCE BY CHINESE ON NEW LINES SINKING OF ENEMY WARSHIP REPORTED. SEVERAL OTHERS DAMAGED. By Telegraph-Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 12.55 p.m.) HANKOW, August 4. It is officially claimed that bombers sank a Japanese warship and damaged several, near Anking. It is reported that the Yangtse floods and also the first firm resistance along the new lines to which the Chinese have retreated after the fall of Kiukiang have slowed down the Japanese advance. It is admitted, however, that the Japanese have reached Huangmei, on the north bank of the river. JAPANESE CLAIM. GUNBOATS & JUNKS SUNK. (Recd This Day, 12.55 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 4. It is claimed that Japanese planes sank two Chinese gunboats and fourteen junks laden with munition, 30 miles north-west of Kiukiang and also inflicted heavy losses on concentrations 30 miles north-west of Hukow.
