Residents of Omihi and Waipara must have derived considerable amusement from the costumes of the 1334 trampers who passed through the district recently, says a southern exchange. A wide variety of garments, in myriad colour combination, clad the multitude. One particularly dapper young man was clad in beret, pullover, sports coat, shorts, stockings and buckled shoes. The ensemble lost most of its chic, however, as a result of the fringe of underpants peeping below the red-striped shorts. A veteran who scorned such fine garb did the warmer part of the trip clad only in shorts, a popular garmetn with men and women alike, but obviously because of their utility, not aesthetic qualities. Packs ranged from huge shoulder-bags, giving their owners snail-like appearances, to the everyday attache case. Several groups of horses watched the party straggle across the hills with keen interest, but a herd of Polled Angus bullocks found the sight too much, and fled.
