SIXTH WIN

ALL BLACKS BEAT DARLING DOWNS BACKS CLEVER IN ATTACK. MANY SCRUM INFRINGEMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. TOOWOOMBA (Queensland), Aug. 3. The All Blacks won their sixth match of the present tour today by defeating Darling Downs by 36 points to 6. The score at half time was 19 to nil. The game was played on a hard ground and consequently the players did not take undue liberties on the eve of the second Test. Outstanding players were Griffiths and Mitchell of the backs and McKenzie and Parkhill of the forwards.

Mitchell’s performance must have pleased the selectors as his form in the match against Queensland suggested that he was carrying a little overweight. His backing up today was particularly fine and brought at least three tries. A feature of the game was the remarkable number of penalties for scrum infringements by both sides, resulting in 13 free kicks. As a whole the All Black forwards did not tackle over convincingly, but the backs again displayed cleverness in attack. Dick played his first match of the tour, and, while his game was not outstanding. his form was sufficient to oring him into the running with Phillips and Wright for the wing position in the Test. Tries in the first half were scored by Mitchell (two), Parkhill and'Jackson (one each). Griffiths, at full-back, converted two goals, and kicked a penalty. His kicking was outstanding. In the second half Lambourn, Williams and Phillips scored one try each. Griffiths converted one and kicked two penalties. The All Blacks were successful in 25 and Darling Downs in 16 line-outs. The opening try came early. A dropped pass by Hooper was snapped up by Mitchell (captain), who walked in. It was the Saxton-Berghan combination that made the next try. Berghan cleverly worked the ‘blind side and Parkbill was there to take the last pass and score. A splendid run by Dick made the next try for Jackson. A dropped pass by the Darling Downs centrd, O’Connor, allowed Mitchell to snap up and score the remaining try of the first half. Lambourne’s try in the second half came from a crosskick by Dick, who showed great speed. Williams’s try was scored from a ruck, and Phillips scored the remaining try after Hooper had sliced the opposition. As a result of this match the All Blacks have scored a total of 188 points on the present tour, and have had 48 scored against them. SECOND TEST. NEW ZEALAND TEAM. TOOWOOMBA (Queensland), Aug. 3. The following will represent New Zealand in the second Test against Australia on Saturday at Brisbane: — Full-back, Taylor; . three-quarters, Morrison, Mitchell, Phillips; fiveeighths, Berghan, Sullivan; half-back, Saxton; forwards, Dalton, Quaid, George, Bowman, King, Milliken, McKenzie, Parkhill. Several passengers who arrived at Wellington from Sydney in the Wanganella yesterday were full of praise for the New Zealand Rugby team at present touring Australia. Sir Charles Marr, Sydney, vice-president of the New South Wales Rugby Union, said that the team was the best side New Zealand had ever sent to Australia. A New Zealander, formerly an official of the Canterbury Rugby Union, said he considered the team the best the country had ever produced. Both men made special mention of the good showing of the back line and both spoke of T. C. Morrison’s outstanding performances.
