Carterton Fatality.

An inquest concerning the death of the late Miss Veronica (Bonnie) Ireland, who was killed when she was knocked down by a motor car on the Carterton Road on July 22, will be held at the Carterton Courthouse next Tuesday, starting at 10 a.m. Dust Covers for Books. Following the example set by book clubs, the Canterbury Public Library has decided to clothe in dust-covers all volumes issued to subscribers from the circulating department. The first supply of covers, in stout lemoir-yellow paper, was available for use just before the week-end, and the staff set about learning the knack of manipulating the covers and their securing rubber bands. The soiled state of some of the covers which came back with returned books this week was convincing evidence of the value of these covers in protecting the library’s property. Hawke’s Bay Roads. After being blocked by heavy falls of snow on the Titiokura and Turangikuma hills, the Napier-Taupo road was opened for traffic last night. The Automobile Association reports that although the road is open care is still necessary, but if finer weather continues the condition of the road should rapidly improve. The association also reports that the condition of the Napier-Wairoa road is improved, and the road is now open to all classes of traffic. Titiokura Hill yesterday morning was heavily covered with snow, and a Public Works Department grader was sent out to assist a large gang to clear the road. The service car from Napier was unable to get through in the morning, and another car left in the afternoon.
