PENNY CHEQUE

REFUND FROM RAILWAY COMPANY. The Mayor of Southampton received a cheque for a penny from the Southern Railway the other day. It was the cost of a platform ticket bought by the Mayor refunded because he is entitled to free access to the Southampton Station. ! Penny cheques are the smallest recognised by British baV's, although some have been made out for lower amounts. In 1933 a business man in England received a cheque for one cent, equivalent to a halfpenny, from the U.S. Treasury. It represented an overcharge on his dividends from American investments. At the other end of the scale, really big cheques are more frequently drawn. One for £5,173,572 changed hands in 1913 when Lord Kylsant bought the Union Castle Line. It was later capped by the £30,000,000 cheque which Dodge Bros, received for their motor car business. In the City of London huge cheques are regular events. One for £ 12,646,929 passed between two firms in 1933. The London Passenger Transport Board made one out for £500,000 a few weeks ago, - covering the licence fees on all their vehicles for the current year.
