CONCLUSION OF WAIRARAPA TOURNEY. KEEN CONTESTS ON SATURDAY. The defeat of Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth, national title-holders, in the final of the combined doubles by J. Payton and Miss B. Payton was the outstanding feature of the concluding games in the Wairarapa Badminton Association’s annual tournament in the Drill Hall on Saturday night. The Paytons played consistently good badminton and thoroughly deserved their fine win over their .formidable opponents. i The unexpected also occurred in the final of the men’s doubles when Payton and Lulham defeated Hawksworth and O’Connor. Hawksworth retained his singles title, defeating Payton in straight sets in the final. Miss Nancy Fleming (Wellington) was in fine form to win ■ the final of the ladies’ singles from Mrs Hawksworth. Mrs Hawksworth and Miss Fleming won the final of the ladies’ doubles from Misses Payton.- . The standard .of play was high throughout and again gave evidence of Wairarapa’s strength as a badminton centre. Most of the games were close arid keenly contested and provided the Spectators with an excellent night’s entertainment. The organisation of the fixture was first-rate and the games were got off with a minimum of delay. Mr J. K. Logan, president of the association congratulated the successful competitors on their performance and Mrs Logan presented the cups and other trophies. Results: —
