WOMEN’S HOCKEY
MATCH AT WELLINGTON KIA ORA TEAM BEATEN The annual senior A women’s hockey match between Kia Ora (Masterton) and Wellington College Old Girls, at Newtown Park on Saturday was won by College Old Girls by a decisive margin of eight goals to one. Because of rain the ground was in a very greasy condition, which lowered the standard of play, and infringements were numerous on both sides. However, there were some bright patches of hockey. The teams were:— Kia Ora: B. Walsh, F. Bellis, B. Allan, J. Rutherford, E. Barnes, M. Whybourn, P. Andrews, B. Vincent, F. Stewart, H. Henderson, G. Beard. College Old Girls: Mrs E. Daniells, Z. Morris, I. Morris, M. Smith, M. Clark, R. Walker, R. Mumm, I. Pickering, H. McLellan, N. Prestney, J. Yateman. From the bully Old Girls a tacked strongly, and only the good work of Kia Ora’s goalkeeper, Miss B. JJValsh, kept Old Girls from scoring. From a clever combination attack by the College backs Miss H. McLellan netted after enticing Kia Ora’s goalkeepers to one side of the net, shooting to the other. From then on Old Girls dominated play, allowing Miss H. McLellan to net twice before the end of the spell. The second half opened with Old Girls attacking strongly, but Kia Ora responded nobly. After a smart attack by Kia Ora, Miss G. Beard netted with a clever shot. College took charge from then on, and Miss H. McLellan scored three more goals, which were quickly followed by Miss J. Yateman and N. Prestney scoring one each. Scorers for Old Girls were Misses H. McLellan (6), J. Yateman and M. Prestney; and for Kia Ora, Miss Y. Beard. The umpires were Miss M. Wilkins and Mr H. Tahiwi.
