FOR THE FIGURE

WORK IN THE GARDEN GOOD GENERAL EXERCISE Working in the garden is as good for you as it is for your lawns and flower-beds. Jobs like digging, mowing or shaping a border bring all the muscles of the body into action while the fresh air is a splendid tonic. Digging is equally good for your stomach, legs, arms, and back. But you must not stay bent all the time; each time you lift out your spade full of earth you must stand quite upright. Try to divide the effort equally between both legs and both arms. Cutting wood is the best general exercis'e. But it must be done in the right way; you must hold in your stomach and use a long enough.saw to let you stand right up and bend right down each time. Mowing the law forces you to make the efforts of pulling as well as pushing; the longer the grass, the better the exercise. It is very good for strengthening your stomach muscles and making you hold yourself straight. Pushing a wheelbarrow makes you life and push at the same time, an excellent exercise for your arms, should-’ ers and bust. Do not be afraid to load your barrow pretty heavily; it will make the exercise all the harder—and better. When your barrow is empty, walk very quickly; that is a good training for your balance.Watering is an excellent exercise if, instead of using a big, heavy wateringcan, you use two little ones, s.o that you can stand upright. Use one can at a time with alternate hands.
