BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. The Wairarapa Basketball Association’s competition was continued on Saturday last on the Wairarapa College grounds. The results were as follow: — A Grade. Stars I beat College A, 19/16. Stars II beat College B, 24/16. lona and W.H.S.O.G. I drew, 14 all. B Grade. Dalefield beat Stars, 17/2. Carterton beat lona, 9/6. T.O.G. beat College IV, 10/5. College 111 forfeited to College 11. Hospital beat College I, 22/11.
The A grade saw the four leading teams playing one another and some very exciting contests resulted. The Stars I v. College A match was a very close one, only one point separating the teams at half-time. A few minutes from the end the scores were even and then Stars scored several times in quick succession. The best play was in the College forwards, Stars defence third, and here the College girls stood up nobly to the machine-like strength of the defenders. A. Burgess’s interceptions were noteworthy and K. Moua’t who has changed from the centre played an excellent defence game. J. Gemmell and P. Baskiville played up ’ to their best form and both shot some excellent goals. Stars centres were not as strong as usual and the College girls outplayed them most of the time. College defenders failed in positional play and frequently got in one another’s way. N. Wilson, however, fully justified her promotion. H.S.O.G. I v. Iona: A great deal of interest was taken in this game as it
was the first time this year that the two teams had met. Both played a determined game and a pleasing one to watch. P. Hanley and M. Brader (Iona) were shooting well, but there was a great deal of wild passing in this third, of which L. Renner and O. Gorringe took full advantage. The latter is a much improved player who should give a good account of herself next Saturday. N. Cohen (Old Girls) was at the top of her form with clean, effortless goals. M. Roys also shot some useful goals. One of the quickest players on the field was M. Eastwood (Iona) whose play 'is always • good to watch.
The Stars II v. College B match saw much slower passing, especially in the Star’s forward third, though here J. Stains threw well. One of the quickest and most useful players here was J. Jones (Stars) though she took part in the regrettably long passing of her team. The College centres lost position and bunched badly. D. Dagg and H. Leitch again played excellently for College. The Carterton v. lona match in the B grade was an interesting one. The lona team is a most promising one. These girls throw straight, hard and quickly, but Carterton produced better positional play. A very small emergency in the lona team, M. Williams, gave a quick and accurate display. L. Simmonds threw well for Carterton.
The T.O.G. v. College IV match saw the best display the latter team has given. These girls are keen and quick, though their throwing is inclined to be wild and excited. In the College forward third M. Jones and S. Duley gave a very promising display. They should do very well in a stronger team. For T.O.G. J. Snelgrove was a willing and accurate worker, but she should learn two-handed throwing.
