HOLING IN ONE
* ENORMOUS ODDS AGAINST •FEAT. To hole out with a tee shot must be the ambition of every golfer, but it is something rather inexplicable when it does occur. The odds against success are enormous. The hole is only 41in in diameter, so that luck plays a greater part in the performance than skill. In 1932, at a course near New York, 217 professional and amateur golfers, who had all previously holed in one, were invited to participate in a competition the object of which was to deliberately accomplish this rarq feat. Each player have five shots —1085 separate attempts —and they all failed. It is recorded in the “Golfers’ Handbook,” among a long and interesting list of curious incidents relating to this particular shot, that only 24 of the 1085 shots finished within even 10ft of the flag, and the nearest to the hole was 25in.
