HOLIDAY ANAEMIA
APPARENT ON THE LONDON STOCK MARKETS CONTINUATION OF DRIFT DOWNWARD. COMMODITIES IRREGULAR. (Recd This Day, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, July 29. The stock markets are increasingly succumbing to holiday anaemia. Prices of all sections are drifting downwards. An undertone of satisfaction at the reassuring words of the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) regarding the international situation did not carry enough conviction to cause a rally. With gilt-edged stocks the tendency is an easier tone. Bonds ‘ are healthy, with institutional support for Chinese, but Japanese have declined further. Improvement in the European political outlook is not reflected by the foreign exchanges. There has been no repatriation of European capital from New York. A small recovery in sterling was helped by Japanese gold sales for raw materials. Commodities are irregular, though mostly better on balance. Copper touched its highest level since the end of February. Unseasonable weather has affected the wool distributive trades, which are doubtful wnether they can make up lost ground.
