RUSSIA & JAPAN

ENGAGEMENT ON USSURI RIVER ALLEGED VIOLATION OF FRONTIER. PROTEST TO THE SOVIET. (Recd This Day, 12.25 p.m.) TOKIO, July 27. The Foreign Office reveals that Soviet and Manchukuan troops clashed on July 22 on the banks of the Ussuri River, to the south of Haborvsk. It is alleged that Soviet gunboats fired on Manchukuan troops travelling downstream to Joaho. Soviet troops then crossed the river to Manchukuan territory and fired on villages, withdrawing after a five hours’ engagement with the Manchukuan troops, who protested to the Soviet. Russian troops still are occupying Changkufeng. Their dislodgment has not been attempted. *• A Foreign Office statement says Japan is most anxious for the establishment of a /joint frontier commission for the demarcation of the frontier.
