CHINESE RETREAT
KIUKIANG ABANDONED NEW DEFENSIVE LINE TAKEN UP. HEAVY JAPANESE LOSSES REPORTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 12.25 p.m.) HANKOW, July 27. After withdrawing in a south-east-erly direction from Kiukiang, the main Chinese body established a new defence line. They claim to be still engaging the Japanese in a rearguard action, inflicting heavy casualties. No extensive damage has been done to foreign property in Kiukiang. JAPANESE IN HONG KONG. MEASURES OF PROTECTION APPRECIATED. (Recd This Day, 12.10 p.m.) TOKIO, July 27. Mr Makamuru, Consul-General at Hong Kong, pays a warm tribute to British precautions to protect Japanese in Hong Kong, declaring they were ensured safety despite the presence of thirty thousand Chinese who are inflamed by propaganda from Hankow.
