GRIM DEFENCE
CHINESE HOLD PART OF KIUKIANG REINFORCEMENTS RUSHED UP ATTEMPTS TO STEM JAPANESE ADVANCE SHANGHAI, July 27. The Chinese claim that only part of the Kiukiang, the key-city in the defence of' Hankow, has fallen. They are grimly holding on to the remainder of the town in the hope that reinforcements, which are rushing up, will stem the advance. Great fires raged in the city throughout the night. The Japanese forces have split in two columns, one advancing to Hankow, up the Yangtse valley, the other opening a new line of attack south along the railway from Kiukiang to Nanchang.
