MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FORTNIGHTLY MASTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND BY-LAW’CASES. Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court, held this morning. For driving a motor car in Queen •Street without lights, T. S. Taylor was convicted and fined £1 and costs 10s. F. N. Mitchell was convicted and fined £2 and costs 10s for driving at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour. “He had an English licence 12 months old, which he thought would do in New Zealand,” observed Constable R. Hollis when I. S. R. Daviswas charged with parking on the wrong side of the road and with having no driver’s licence. Defendant was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs on each charge. Alice M. Buchanan and M. D. Sim were each convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs for parking cars otherwise than parallel to the kerb. For operating a radio without a licence, 11. S. Robinson was fined 30s and 10s costs.
“We will give him the benefit of the doubt,” observed Mr. Lawry when convicting and fining J. S. Riddiford 10s and 12s costs for driving without a driver’s licence. “I live 29 miles out in the country and only come into town once a month,” stated F. W. Johnson when pleading guilty to driving without a licence. He was convicted and fined 5s and 12s costs. On a similar charge, S. A. Shearer was fined 10s and 12s costs.
A charge of driving without care and attention against H. D. McManaway was dismissed. He was fined 10s for having no warrant of fitness. Mr C. C. Marsack appeared for defendant. H. Brittain was fined 10s and 10s costs' on each of two charges of having no driver’s licence and no warrant of fitness.
