THE TORTURE OF SCIATICA
TRY THIS .TREATMENT. Mr W Rayner, “The Cliffs,” Masterton, writes interestingly as follows concerning a cure for sciatica which he has successfully tried: — “About 12 months ago I had a very severe attack of sciatica, and I might say I have had rheumatism for many years. I thought I knew what pain was, but I did not until I had had sciatica. I cured myself very simply and I have gone 12 months without a pain. I put a handful of sulphur, a handful of washing soda (I sometimes use baking soda; I dp not know which is the best) and a handful of Epsom salts (you can buy these at 4d a lb) and 1 level teaspoonful of cayenne pepper in a saucepan. Then put in about 12 to 14 cups of hot water. If a bad case, sit before a fire. Put a newspaper on the chair and another on the floor, and on another chair the mixture. Sponge the affected part well. I did mine night and morning for 4 or 5 days. After I sponged myself I put the mixture on the fire again and made it hot enough to put my feet in. I have it as hot as possible. Put the mixture in a hand bowl with a newspaper underneath to catch splash. Keep feet moving in the bowl until nearly cold. I never dry my feet or back. It soon dries on by the fire and if it is not dry I put my socks on. I suppose those suffering from pain in the hands would have to put their hands in. But I would put the feet in too. I had a very bad turn after I had sponged myself the first time but I have not had a pain since. I had thought for years my kidneys were but since using the above mixture I am feeling perfect. I have had catarrh for 50 or 60 years and bronchitis for a few years. I had a very bad turn two or three years ago but I seem to be nearly right now. I do not know if the mixture has had anything to do with my improvement. But I am better than I have been for years, which is worth a lot. I suppose I have not missed my footbath more than six times in a year. I would advise sufferers to try it for at least three months. It is cheap and easy to make and use. After seven or eight treatments, add more water and every fortnight or so put another full mixture in. Do the same every three weeks after. I used the same mixture for about ten months. It was then getting a bit dark and thick. If anyone tries this treatment I would like them to let this paper know how it has worked. The treatment has been worth hundreds of pounds to me.’
