FEATHERSTON
SCHOOL COMMITTEE (“Times-Age” Special) The Featherston school committee held its monthly meeting in the headmaster’s office last night. Those present were Messrs F. A. Dohnt, chairman, C. C. Kenward, secretary, J. Higgison, treasurer, W. Jeffries, F. A. O’Neale, E. B. Baker,.-S. Murphy, J. W. Henderson. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the general account of £49 7s 6d. Accounts totalling £lO Ils 2d were passed for payment. The secretary reported that the Minister for Employment had granted the committee the services of two men on full sudsidy. These two men were employed on the removal of pine tree stumps from the Primary, school recreation grounds. The chairman reported that the men were doing excellent work, and were tackling a difficult and arduous task in a workmanlike manner.
The Wellington Education Board wrote advising that the insurance of the two men had been attended to. The committee was advised that the board had accepted the tender of Mr O’Neale for the replacement of five cisterns at the primary school. The secretary announced that the custodian had reported favourably on the combination oil and stain to counteract the dust nuisance, and that a fresh supply had been purchased. It was decided to ask the board to supply 18 chairs for the use of the infants, to recondition six tables, which needed repair, and to purchase 10 yards of matting for the primary department. The secretary was asked to point out to the Borough Council the bad condition of the footpaths in Lyon Street, as it was difficult for the children to use this approach and remain dry shod. It'was decided to have the basket"ball standards renewed, and the football goal posts attended to. The secretary was asked if any reply had been received from the chairman or secretary of the Wairarapa Milk-in-Schools Committee as to the likelihood of the scheme being extended to the Wairarapa children during the coming season. Mr Kenward gave a comprehensive outline of what had been done up to date. He explained that some six months ago, acting under the instructions of the Featherston School Committee, he had written to the secretary of the Milk Committee for information, but did not receive the courtesy of a reply. He then approached the chairman of the committee (Mr W. R. Nicol) by letter, but was again ignored. It seemed, that for some reason, best known to themselves, the executive of the milk-in-schools committee were pursuing a policy of secrecy. It was not right that while other districts were extending the scheme, nothing was being done to gain this benefit for the Wairarapa children. After further discussion it was decided to ask other Wairarapa School Committees to combine to approach the member for the Wairarapa, Mr Ben Roberts and the member for Masterton, Mr J. Robertson to see if the Government could not do something to accelerate a scheme for the Wairarapa.
