CARTERTON

A HOUSE WARMING. (“Times-Age” Special.) About 50 friends on Saturday evening assembled at the new residence of Mr and Mrs Murdo Campbell, of Clareville, who were recently married. A very enjoyable time was spent in singing and dancing, the music for which was played by Messrs A. McKay and L. Allen. Congratulations were extended by all to Mr and Mrs Campbell. A happy evening terminated at midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” LATE MRS A. R. SAYER. The funeral of the late Mrs A. R. Sayer took place on Saturday afternoon at the Clareville Cemetery in the presence of a very large number of mourners, 1 including relatives and friends; A service was first held at St. Mary’s Church, by Father Carmine, who also conducted the service at the graveside. A large number of beautiful' wreaths were sent by sympathisers. The pall-bearers were Messrs Leo Sayer, Cedric Knutson, E. Hughes, W. Wright, Fred Fox and -B. Lipinski. CARTERTON WIN AT GOLF. The Carterton Golf Club visited the Te Wharau Golf Club on Sunday for the first time, and played an enjoyable series of matches. Carterton proved too superior for the country players, winning by 9 games. The visitors won 20 games lost 11 and one game was halved. In the ladies’ fourball Carterton won 2 games and. Te. Wharau 3 games. In the men’s fourball Carterton won 3 and Te Wharau 2. In the ladies’ singles Carterton won 6 games Te Wharau 3, and in the men’s singles Carterton won 9 to Te Wharau’s 3. The visitors were hospitably entertained and greatly appreciated the kindness of the Te Wharau Club members. The following are the results of the matches played (Carterton players being mentioned first in each instance): — Men: —Fourball: B. Booth and R. Fisher lost to H. Parker and E. Nitz; R. At the conclusion of the match Mr Gustofson thanked the home team for the enjoyable match and the hospitality accorded to them. Mr Gray suitably replied on behalf of the Te Wharau Club. Carterton was not at its full strength and Frank Fitzgerald turned out for the team. For Carterton, tries were scored by D. Smith (2), Crawley (2), Brown (2). Loader converted four tries and potted a goal. Harp also potted a goal, and Fitzgerald kicked a penalty. For Martinborough, Mahupuka kicked a penalty goal and Mason scored .a try. FUNERAL OF MISS IRELAND. The funeral of the late Miss Veronica Ireland, who was accidentally killed on Friday night, took place at the Clareville Cemetery yesterday. Included among the many beautiful wreaths were those sent by the Carterton School, of which deceased was an ex-pupil, the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club and the staff of the Tivoli Theatre. The Rev. Methodist minister, and Lieut. Harwood, of the Salvation Army, officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs M. Wood, F. Pauhl, G. Goodin, V. Goodin, G. Ireland (cousins of the deceased), and L. Hurndell. PERSONALS. Mrs T. W. Feast and her infant son, who have been on a visit to Mr and Mrs A. C. Feast, Rhodes Street, left yesterday for their home in Gore. Mrs McCaughan, of Garston, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs A. H. Feast, left yesterday for home, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs Trevor Feast. Mrs M. K. Trott has returned to Wellington, after spending a month with her brother, Mr A. T. Hawke, of Clareville. Mr A. T. Hawke received word last week of the death of his sister, Mrs John Shotter, of Stratford, at the age of 66. Mr R. Parsons, of the Agricultural Department, Blenheim, who has been the guest of Mr L. H. Wightman, Carterton, has returned to Wellington on departmental business. BASKETBALL DANCE. A large number of people enjoyed a good time at a dance organised by the Dalefield basketball young ladies, and held in the Dalefield hall on Saturday evening. The music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton and Mr S. Te Tau. Extras were played by Miss M. Herrick and Mr Benton. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr Hooper and partner, and the statue waltz by Mr Hack and partner. DEATH OF MR W. B. SMITH. The death occurred yesterday at Otaki of Mr William Burns Smith, in his 76th year. The late Mr Smith was formerly a well-known headmaster in the service of the Wellington Education Board, and in the nineties was a respected assistant teacher on the staff of the Carterton School. He is survived by a widow, the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Moncrieff, Senr., formerly of Parkvale and Clareville. There is an adult family of one son and two daughters. Two sons predeceased their father.
