WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

UPPER PLAIN MEETING The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Mannell. Mrs Dagg presided over a large attendance. Visitors and five new members were welcomed. Before commencing the business the members stood in silence out of respect to the memory of Mrs Crewe, late President of the Federation. The “Golden Thread” was given by Miss B. Munro, who spoke on Early Masterton. Her talk was much appreciated, and she will probably speak again at a later date. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Mannell and Miss McKenzie. Then followed a community sing, including the Institute songs. Mrs W. G. Laing, being the accompaniste. The competitions for the month were won as follows: — Best bloom, Mrs Laing, 1 and 2. Eggless cake, Mrs Steer, 1; Mrs W. Taplin, 2. Miss D. Laing was appointed delegate to attend the conference in Wellington this week. Votes of thanks were passed to Miss Munro and to Mesdames Scott and Thompson for judging the competitions. A happy afternoon was brought to a .close with the singing of the National Anthem.

KOPUARANGA GATHERING. The Kopuaranga Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the hall recently, Mrs S. J. Clarke presiding over a good attendance. The roll-call for the afternoon was “My Favourite Fruit.” Competitions resulted as follows: — Best bloom, Mrs Evans 1, Miss L. Fenemor 2, Mrs Fenemor 3; slippers, Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Jarrett 2, Miss E. Jarrett 3; gingerbread, Mrs Wright 1, Mrs A. B. Cottle 2, Mrs Jarrett 3. A presentation of a silver spoon was made to Baby Fenemor. A demonstration on glove making was given by Mrs Condon, members taking a keen interest in all the details. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. MEETING AT HASTWELLS. Mrs Elliott presided over a fair attendance at the July meeting of the Hastwells Women’s Institute. Mrs Kenny gave an interesting garden talk, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs Crewe, and also to the president, Mrs Elliott, in the loss of her father. The cooking competition resulted as follows: —Seniors: Melting moments, Mrs Mackay 1, Mrs G. Halberg 2 and Mrs K. Ngatuere 3. There were no entries in the junior section. The competition for the best flower in the garden resulted in Miss Iris Madsen being placed first, Miss Fredricksen second and Mrs Elliott third. Mrs Kenny and Miss E. Dick were accorded votes of thanks for having judged the competitions. The game, conducted by Mrs Caseley, was won by Mrs Dick, Mrs Madsen, Mrs Broadbent and Mrs K. Ngatuere second,. and Mrs Mackay third. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs G. Halberg and Miss Fredricksen. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
